Finished reading: Keeper of the House by Rebecca T. Godwin 📚 From the Durham NC Public Library. Inspired by the Sunset Lodge, what’s most remarkable about this novel is the voice of its black first-person narrator, Minyon Marigault, who arrives at the Hazelhedge brothel at 14 years old from her Gullah community as a housekeeper and eventually, keeper of the house and its secrets. I became a little impatient with some of the melodramatic events and the somewhat stagey characters – Miss Addie, the madam, among them. But I was completely captivated by the voice of Minyon, her language, her turns of phrase, and her growing sense of her power and her place in the world.
